ALEXANDRIA, VA, October 28, 2008 – With winter approaching, BoatU.S. Marine Insurance has reviewed its claim files and reports the following six most common mistakes made when winterizing a boat:
1. Failure to winterize the engine: Freezing temperatures occur in all 50 states and while they are taken seriously up north, it’s the balmy states of California, Florida, Texas, Alabama and Georgia where boaters are most likely to have freeze-related damage to engine blocks. It routinely occurs to boats stored ashore here. Boats left in a slip are less susceptible to sudden freezing as the surrounding water retains heat longer than air.

TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA- In Florida, public access to the waterfront and water-dependent businesses are being taxed out of existence. That’s due to the state’s inequitable tax code that appraises every single waterfront parcel — marina, boat ramp, commercial fishing operation or any other water-dependent facility — at “highest and best use” tax rates, not what the property is actually used for. On November 4, Sunshine State voters will have a chance to level the playing field by voting “yes” on Amendment 6, which if passed will allow waterfront parcels to be assessed on their present use as a marina, launch ramp or other waterfront business, and help keep the state’s waterways accessible to all Floridians.

The 22-day Gauley Rafting season has winded down, and once again it has brought in close to $45 million to West Virginia and the outfitters. Although numbers have been on the decline since 2000, the last year have seen a slowing in the decline.
Hopefully that trend will at least hold steady. For many of the outfitters, Gauley river rafting makes or breaks the season. Amazing that in a matter of days, your season can be up or down. But when you can charge a premium (around $145 for a half-day trip) for some of the most exciting whitewater rafting in the world, it has the potential for making a lot of money.
The exact numbers are not in yet, but I will report some of them as soon as I get me hands on the info. It will also be interesting to see how some of the larger companies fare with all the mergers and consolidation in the West Virginia rafting industry.
